The business is a luxury wedding venue and working farm in Bedfordshire situated within the boundaries of a national scheduled monument. The venue offers a full catering operation, function rooms, bar areas, bridal suites, a traditional barn for ceremonies, and on-site accommodation.

Rising energy costs

With no mains gas supply, the business was heating the venue and producing hot water entirely through oil-fired boilers, at a cost of around £74,000 per year in combined energy spend. Annual electricity consumption was approximately 280MWh.

Rising energy costs, combined with a genuine commitment to reducing the site's carbon footprint, led the business to explore solar PV, but the location created significant additional complexity. The site's status as a scheduled monument and designated conservation area meant any development would face scrutiny from heritage bodies.

Managing the planning process

Practical Energy Solutions (PES) modelled the solar PV system to maximise generation within the constraints set by the District Network Operator (DNO). The rural grid infrastructure limited maximum system output to 150kW – beyond which a new substation would have been required, adding substantial cost.

The original proposed location for the solar arrays was objected to by the planning department on heritage grounds, to protect the significance of the listed manor house and medieval moat. As a result, the arrays were relocated approximately 0.5km eastward, to an area of low-grade arable land set aside from the main farm.

Following archaeologist intervention, the mounting method was also changed from ground screws to concrete block fixings to protect any historical assets that might be present beneath the site.

All installation work was carefully timed to cause minimum disruption to the business. The final grid connection required only a 4-hour site power-down.
