Commercial Battery Storage (BESS)

TECHNOLOGY

How they work

Commercial Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) capture, store, and dispatch electrical energy on demand. Combining high-capacity batteries – predominantly lithium-ion – with inverters and intelligent management software allows businesses to take active control of their energy use, reduce operating costs, and improve sustainability.

BESS sits between a facility's power sources – grid supply, on-site solar, or both – and the building's operational loads.  An Energy Management System (EMS) controls when to charge the batteries, when to store renewable energy, and when to discharge stored power, making those decisions automatically based on tariff rates, demand patterns, and generation output.

Where BESS works best

BESS technology is highly modular – scalable from medium commercial operations to large industrial sites. It tends to deliver the strongest returns for:

Is battery storage right for your business

BESS works best when there's a clear use case – whether that's cutting peak demand charges, maximising returns from existing solar, protecting against outages, or supporting EV infrastructure.

To assess whether it's worth it for your site, the key factors are your current electricity spend, whether you already have on-site renewable generation, and what your primary goal is. We review all of this as part of our assessment, model the financial case, and give you a clear picture of projected savings and payback before any commitment is made.
